Storyline
After the release of Jake Blues from prison, he and brother Elwood go to
visit "The Penguin", the last of the nuns who raised them in a boarding
school. They learn the Archdiocese will stop supporting the school and
will sell the place to the Education Authority. The only way to keep the
place open is if the $5000 tax on the property is paid within 11 days.
The Blues Brothers want to help, and decide to put their blues band back
together and raise the the money by staging a big gig. As they set off
on their "mission from God" they seem to make more enemies along the
way. Will they
manage to come up with the money in time?

This
definitive cult classic combines two of the pioneers of Saturday Night
Live in a hilarious comedy, indulging into their characters from the
show. John Belushi and Dan Akroyd are Jake and Elwood Blues, two
eccentric brothers who are "On A Mission From God". They seem to
inevitably find themselves in large amounts of trouble. The most fun is
living vicariously through them as they stick it to the police and other
authority figures and evade the consequences. Blues fans will rave over
the fantastic soundtrack full of classic blues tunes from the biggest
stars. This film is one that will have you quoting lines, singing along,
and quite possibly dancing like Elwood. By the way, sunglasses can be
worn at all times, black never goes out of style, and dry white toast is
quite possibly the world's perfect food.

The Secret Service marks the third film in a row that director Matthew
Vaughn has adapted from a comic book background. His two predeceasing
being Kick-Ass (2010) and X-Men: First Class (2011) - which, by all
means, were pretty damn good! Over the last few decades, both
comic and superhero movies, mostly fall into the easy trap of taking
themselves too seriously. Where Vaughn's vision lies, and so-far proved
by his former comic adapted films is that they draw a clean balance to
where drama and serious character development ends, and cartoonish
humour meets, leaving a unique entertainment that stands out.
Based
on the comic by Mark Millar (who also created Kick-Ass), the film sees a
young – no better way to put it – chav, called Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin
(Taron Egerton), taken under the wing of Harry Hart (Colin Firth), a spy
for her majesty's secret service. With the aid of Michael Caine and
Mark Strong, they soon come face-to-face with the villainous Richmond
Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson); an ego- centric - Steve Jobs-type -
billionaire madman (with a lisp), who hates the sight of blood – yet
holds a vision of mass biological warfare.
Licenced to thrill,
Kingsman' is almost a love-letter to the James Bond films – but not too
far as a parody, like Austin Powers - but more a homage to the franchise
- a 007 meets Kick-Ass, of sorts. At a point, Colin Firth's character,
Harry, even mocks the thought by saying 'give me a far-fetched,
theoretical plot any day…'
Fans of Bond and Kick-Ass are certain
to love it, as through rollercoasters of action, comedy and espionage,
comes a bucket of winks, references and nods to the world of spy movies.
Just like the colourful, gadget ridden Bond films of the 1960's,
Kingsman is very fun to watch, with 'wham, bam, thank-you ma'am' style
of mayhem, one- liners and bonkers soundtrack crazed all over it.
The
comic the film was based on was already hugely entertaining – in fact,
probably the best we have read. Littered with Millar's creative
quirkiness and with Vaughn's auteur film-making, has left a
stylized-spectacle of ultra-violence.
Portraying the lead
character of 'Eggsy', Taron Egerton (also in this month's Testament of
Youth), proves to be an outstanding newcomer as he brings the character
to life with an energizing vibe of a comparing ethic of chav lifestyle
vs. gentleman's class.
Alongside, and tackling the mentor, come
father type role, is Colin Firth, who based on previous filmography
alone could easily be classed as Britain's most boring and typecast
actor. Until now, the mold romantic films is broken as he picks up a gun
and finds an encyclopedia of wit and enters openly new territory. It's
Colin Firth like you have never seen before! – and it is bad-ass.
Squeezing
in with a 15 rating (somehow), Kingsman is never short of violence and
its guts and guns galore, when kneecapping; slicing off body parts and
explosions become all too familiar. Given the calibre of talent
involved, Kingsman' does not fall stereotype and gimmicky like other YA
spy adventures like Stormbreaker, or Spy Kids, but instead, a well-deserved mash-up of espionage and true cinematic excitement.

Hot Pursuit is
problematic in its delicate balance as a dark comedy but much lighter
than the norm, but more edgy than the typical criminal comedy thriller.
So what one ends up with a is rather unbalanced but quite satisfying
funny movie with a black undertone in places. Reese Witherspoon does a
very commendable job in a rather more witty, mental whimsical way. It is
Sofia Vergara's performance that pulls the movie down, but because she
does a bad job, but her on-screen persona is so one-sided for most of
the movie. There are hopeful scenes though in which the audience gets to
see Sofia with a more serious presentation that offers up a more fully
range of this delightful character. The twists are predictable, yet the
subplots seem to hold together quite well and are never atrociously over
the top. This is an above average, entertaining criminal comedy
thriller worth experiencing. In the same league as Sandra Bullock and
Melissa McCarthy's The Heat (2013). What must be careful considered is
how this movie has been received as one of the most gender biased rated
movies with females loving and males hating this movie. With a box
office opening of $13.3 million considered a weak opening while the sci
fi thriller Ex Machina (2013) that has accumulated $15.7 million in its
second week is considered doing very well, there is something to wonder
about how this movie is being rated.

Storyline
Sam Brenner, Will Cooper, Ludlow Lamonsoff, and Eddie "The Fire Blaster" Plant all played classic arcade video games as teenagers. But now they have to use their skills to try to save the world from aliens. The aliens watched video feeds that they thought was a declaration of war. So they send down the classic arcade games to destroy earth. They also get help from a military specialist. They have three lives and if all three get used then earth will be destroyed, and every time they lose a live the aliens take someone's life. Who will win, us or the aliens? It's an all-out battle to save our planet and everyone on it.

Being
an old school gamer of the 80s myself, I did enjoy the movie and there
were a few funny moments. My wife even cried a bit a couple of times,
and my 5+ y.o. son was frightened a couple of times, too :) For modern
kids some of the scenes would require a bit of explanation, but my son
is familiar with the most big titles of the 80s, so the movie was
entertaining for him as well. I'm not too demanding on the plot part,
I'm happy that such "bitxploitation" movies are filmed at all. The
beginning was especially promising and made me a bit sentimental.
Overall, pretty good work. Not sure why it has got so many negative
reviews.

Jericho "Action" Jackson is a Detroit police sergeant who was demoted from lieutenant for almost tearing the arm off of sexually violent sociopath Sean Dellaplane, whose father is Peter Dellaplane, a major car manufacturer. But Dellaplane himself is violent as well. Dellaplane kills his wife Patrice by shooting her. And then he plants her body in Jackson's
apartment, framing Jackson. Dellaplane won't miss Patrice very much, because he has a drug-addicted mistress named Sydney Ash. He keeps Sydney hooked with a free supply of heroin. Jackson suspects Dellaplane of masterminding a murder spree against local officials from the auto workers' union. Dellaplane's mission is to gain a political power base and choose the next president of the United States. Because of what happened to Dellaplane's son Sean, Dellaplane has taken a particular dislike to Jackson. Jackson gets Sydney's help in going after Dellaplane.

When I saw this movie back in 1988, I thought then & think now that it was one of the most action packed movies for this genre. Carl Weathers plays a likable cop that goes after an unscrupulous high-end car manufacturer. All of the characters, Vanity, Craig T. Nelson & Sharon Stone round out the cast nicely to make an enjoyable, action packed viewing experience for the 1h30m that it's on. It wasn't mean't to be an academy award winner, but it set out to do what it was intended to do, and that's to be an action packed movie from start to finish. If you can appreciate movies from the '80s, this one will be a welcome addition to any collector's library. I am glad to see it on DVD, because I have played my VHS copy to the max!

We watch the Onion News, America's Finest News Source, with Dana Dobbs, Senior Correspondent Kip Kendall, and award-winning anchor Norm Archer. In addition to watching the news, we see the program's commercials, some commentary on the film as it proceeds, and we watch some terrorists in training. Behind the scenes, Onion News'scorporate owner, Global Tetrahedron, seeks synergy by promoting its other products within Norm's news broadcast. Norm doesn't like it, especially when a toy penguin (think Energizer Bunny) waddles across his desk promoting a Global Tetrahedron film starring Steven Seagal. But Norm may end up needing Steven's help.

There are very few movies that can actually blindside me with a punchline. The Onion Movie did that repeatedly. The plot is very light, and this makes the movie even more enjoyable, I think. But not only is it light, it's also very relevant and critical of the common practices of mass media now-a-days. This movie pulls off a lot of what idiocracy only kind-of succeeded at. From the Hasselhoff bit to the mid-show Asian review to the d&d sketch, the Onion Movie is a rare breath of fresh air!

Stylish, brutal and hilarious. 'Kingsman' is an extremely quintessentially British flick full of over-the-top yet hilarious comedy, brutal violence and a quirky image of England. Since James Bond's debut in 1962, a number of films have attempted to reinvent the genre, with films like 'Johnny English', 'Get Smart', 'This Means War' and many more, however, none have come close to displaying the perfect blend like 'Kingsman' has. Matthew Vaughn has become renowned for taking on action-comedy projects, for instance 'Kick-Ass' (which is still stronger than this but only just), and along the way has kept that feel-good British aspect to it that makes our greatest secret agent (James Bond) such an icon. All-in-all 'Kingsman' is a brilliant, well-executed film.
